Delhi Government Mulls Biometric Attendance for Hospitals

Delhi Government Mulls Biometric Attendance for HospitalsThe Delhi Government in India is considering the implementation of biometric attendance tracking systems in its hospital network. The systems would work with the broader Aadhaar identification system in place in the country.

A senior official said the deliberations are the result of “complaints of doctors, nurses and other paramedic staff not reporting for duty on time,” adding that a biometric attendance tracking system would “make the staff accountable”. There had reportedly been sufficient complaints that the Delhi Health Department was moved to issue a memo to hospital administrators urging them to enforce punctuality more strictly.

The implementation of such a system would be a natural extension of the Aadhaar infrastructure already in place in the country. The biometric citizen ID system is being used for a broad range of purposes, of course, though one that stands out in this context is the use of biometric attendance tracking systems for government employees, which has been rolling out across the country over the past several months. A similar system is also being instituted in a major school district in the country to track teacher attendance.
